Richard Chetynden of Frittenden:   The will I dated 12 Aug 1537, probate 8th Oct 1537.   My wife Joan to get an annuity of13/4 per year for life, which annuity I granted her before marriage.   Also to her, all household goods which she brought with her at the time of our marriage.   Also to her two kine and enough hay to feed them.   To John Cowper, 4 marks.   Residue of movables to my son John Chetynden who is Executor.   Overseer: John Taylor of Frittenden.   Witness:  John Taylor, Thomas Hartredge, John Drayner, James Ryve, Edward Reve.

John Chittenden of Frittenden:   The will is dated 22nd Apr 1542, wife is Elizabeth, and he leaves her all movables to keep his children and ‘the house I live in & the lands on that side of the street with sufficient fuel to be taken from this land for life’.   My wife Elizabeth to have the several pieces of land on the other side of the street for 6 years towards bringing up my children.   At the end of the 6 years, this land to be let to farm to John Drayton for 7 years at 20 shillings a year.   The income from  Draynor will amount to 7 pounds.   Of this 7 pounds 6/8 to pay the rents of the land.   The other 20 nobles to go to my daughter Amy’s at the time of her marriage or when 22.   After my wife’s death, all lands to my sons equally divided.   Witness:  Stephen Day,  John Drayner, Alexander Nebill.

Edward Fowle:   Edward Fowle Bequests to ‘my sister Lettice, wife of Richard Chetynden of Cranbrook’ one of his best chests.   He also leaves to the children of his siter Lettice (unnamed), ‘my house I now dwell in and lands thereto in Staplehurst, equally divided’.   It seems his wife was now living in the house and he gives her one year to vacate ‘then to depart from my home (where I now dwell) and the lands thereto’.

Joan Webb:   In the Will of Joan Webb with probate date of 16th Sept 1555, Ann Chittenden is left 2 eard pans, etc (the abstract does not give details).  After other bequests, Ann gets a share of the residue of the estate.

Inventory for Thomas Chittenden dated 1576 (reference PRC21/3/68)   Inventory Value: 68 shillings and 4 pence.   Items listed:  Featherbed.  Pewter old, 3 pairs of sheets, 3 pairs of  ?, a cubbord,  a bedsted, a chess, a table, 2 candlesticks, other old things.

Chittenden Thomas of Marden:   The will states Thomas is a blacksmith and is dated 10th Feb 1790: He leaves to his nephew Peter Pope of Hawkhurst, butcher ‘my messuage, shop & garden in Marden’ on the condition that he gives Thomas’s niece (Peter’s sister) Elizabeth Hutchings of the City of Canterbury 60 pounds.   To his nephew John Pope of Goudhurst he leaves ‘ my messuage, shop and garden in Staplehurst’ on the condition that John gives to his sister Elizabeth 40 pounds.   Peter and John are also to pay William Chittenden of Staplehurst, brother of Thomas, 3 shiilings, 6 pence per week for as long as he lives, to be paid equally between them out of the rents of the said property.   To sons of my nephew, Thomas Chittenden deceased, Richard and Thomas, 20 pounds each when 21 years old: William, John and James are to have 10 pounds a piece when 21.   To his natural son Nathaniel Chittenden of Pembury, 150 pounds within 12 months of his decease.   To his housekeeper Susanna Osborne 30 pounds.   Executors: Peter Pope, farmer of Goudhurst and Peter Pope, butcher of Hawkhurst

1686 Josiah Colvill:   February the eight in the year of our Lord, one thousand, six hundred and eighty six.   I Josiah Colvill of Cranbrook in the County of Kent, clothier, do make this my last will and testament I will and bequeth unto Josiah Colvill son of my brother Thomas Colvill five pounds to be paid at his apprentice.   I will and bequeath to my three daughters Elizabeth Colville,  Mary Colville and Judith Colville one hundred pounds of lawful money of England to be paid to each of them three hundred pounds.   Within? One year after my decease then I give to my son Josiah Colville three hundred pounds to be paid within seven years after my decease.   I will and bequeath onto my son Josiah Colvill my --- Lands and woodlands being at Glastonbury in Cranbrook, with the appurtenant the unto belonging lately both Mr Sharp to him and his heirs foreever.   Then I will and bequeath to my son Edmond Colvill two hundred pounds to be paid to him the first of November which shall be in the year of our Lord one thousand six hundred and ninety five.   Then I will and bequeath to my son John Colvill the sum of two hundred pounds to be paid to him this first of February in the year of our Lord, which shall be on one thousand six hundred & fifty? Eight.   All the Legacy to be paid with lawful money of England.   Then I give my --- and Land in Wittsham in the Isle of Oxney with all its st------ named three acres of Mary le Land with place aforesaid to my sons Edmond Colvill and John Colvill to be equelly divided between them and my wood called Fogley woods both of my ant?------ lying in Bidenden to them my two sons and their heirs forever after their W------ decease.   Then I give all my household servants ten shillings to each of them that live with me at my decease.   Then I will and bequeath to my spinners half a crown a piece and --- to each of them.   Then I give to My sons five pounds.   All this legacy I will to be paid within one month after my decease.   Then I give to my loving kinsman John Minford three pounds to buy him and his wife a ring.   Then my mind and Will is that if either of my six children dye, Elizabeth, Mary, Judith, Josiah, Edmond, John Colvill dye before they receive their portion given that these survivors shall have thair portion equally divided among them.   Then I give to my wife Judith the use of --- of my household and goods and such shall --- meet to make use of during her natural life and that --- the --- to be divided betwixt my six children before named.   Then I give to my wife Judith Fifty pounds and the residue of my goods and chattels to be divided equally among my six children.   Then I will and bequeath to my wife Judith the rents of my two farms I before given to my three sons for keeping them in good repair and giving in the Bond?.   I gave her? before Marriage to leave he two hundred and fifty pounds.   This would give her during her natural life and then my sons to enjoy them  and their heirs forever.   Then I do appoint Thomas Morton and Thomas Boyle to be overseers of this my will and --- them to take a little care that my legacy given may be discharged and for their gain.   I give to each of them five pounds.   My mind and will is that my wife should marry that my overseers should have formerly given them before they marry for the discharge of my Will my mind and --- and by whose I do make my loving wife Judith full and whole executor of this my will and testament containing two sheets of paper and --- to be my last will and  testament revoling all other and --- have --- my hand and seal.   My mind and will that the house at Whittsham shall be built --- --- attendingto contract made with STEPHEN --- CHITTENDEN and this money paid to my executor out of my estate And when all debts and loans are discharged to make an equal division before given.   I Josiah Colvill testator and declared to be the last will and testament in the presence of William Love, John Long?, Mary Hoster.
